San Clemente Also located in Orange County, San Clemente is a small city located on the coast. Los Angeles is to the north and San Diego roughly the same distance towards the south. It has a population of almost 64,000 people and a reputation as a place where one can enjoy the typical Californian climate, stunning mountain views, and huge hill and a wide ocean with a great beach. It is no surprise that thousands flock here for a spot of surfing and the odd vacation break. It is like a Spanish village that sits by the sea and the Spanish colonial architecture is testament to that. Rights to build on this land were issued around 1925, when property developers believed that the pleasant climate, fertile soils, unspoilt views and welcoming ocean would prove a nice retreat for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the two big cities of Los Angeles and San Diego. Ole Hanson, a former Canadian mayor, purchased a great deal of land here and insisted all title deeds include homes that must be built in the style of Spanish architecture. San Clemente's many red tile roofs and white facades attracted a number of city slickers to purchase property here in its early days but it was in 1969 when President Richard Nixon bought some vacation homes here, one of which would later become known as the "Western White House." President Nixon even retired and spent several years writing his memoirs here in San Clemente and the city was also once host to another Democrat in Franklin D. Roosevelt who would relax and read books overlooking the wide Pacific Ocean. It is also well known by many from the surfing community as a place of paradise with the regular swells that beef up on this vast coastline. The city of San Clemente is well known for its balmy nights and Mediterranean style climate. It does not get oppressively hot during the summer months where temperatures usually average around 80F and the mild winters still see daytime highs around the mid 60s, making this city the perfect retreat from some of the more inland cities where the summer heat can prove uncomfortable. San Clement is also a very easy place to go with good road and rail links. The Interstate 5 runs right through San Clemente but is located just far away as to not disturb some of the national parkland that surrounds the city. |
