Pasadena is a city in the American state of California and is currently the 180th city of the country with regards to population, with an estimated head count of 137,122 (data from 2010). It is 23.128 square miles big, which makes it the 208th city of the United States of America in terms of size. 


 


Etymology


Pasadena as a city was founded in 1874 and formally incorporated in 1886. The city is named after the Chippwa language translation of its names that were submitted by Dr. Thomas Elliott. Names as “Crown of the Valley” and “Valley of the Valley” all ended in Pasadena, which means valley in the language. Hence the name was born. 


 


Demographics


Of the current population (137,122), 55.8% is white, 10.7% is African-American, 0.6% is Native American and 14.3% is Asian. Over 33.7% is Hispanic. Of all households, 26.2% have children that are younger than 18 years old. 11.1% of households are single women, 4.5% of the households are single men. The average family size in 2010 was 3.18. 


 


Climate


The climate of Pasadena is very warm, since it is located in the south of California. Average temperature varies between 64°F in January and 89°F in August, with a very dry summer. 


 


Public facilities


Pasadena is well equipped with public facilities, such as the Rose Bowl Stadium, an Aquatic Center and a tennis center. The city forms the northern end station of the Los Angeles Metro Gold Line light rail. The regional airport is the Bob Hope airport in the city of Burbank. The city has plenty of museums and galleries. In terms of education, the city is home to the prestigious California Institute of Technology as well as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  The city furthermore offers an elaborate list of colleges, high schools and elementary schools.
