Fashion Island, a popular shopping and entertainment area, is located in Newport Beach, and draws thousands of visitors to the city each year. The Pelican Hills region of the city is home to two public golf courses, both of which are ranked in the top 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses by Golf Digest.

The beach has been a popular tourist destination since the early 1900's, when people were first brought to the area by train. Many surfers make the pilgrimage to the city each year to enjoy what is said to be one of the best surfing areas in the continental United States.
