Torrance is a city in the American state of California and is currently the 155th city of the country with regards to population, with an estimated head count of 137,946 (data from 2000). It is 20.553 square miles big, which makes it the 214th city of the United States of America in terms of size. 


 


Etymology


The city of Torrance was named for the real estate developer that initially saw value in creating a community near the south of Los Angeles: his name was Jared Signey Torrance, and that is how the city was created in the early 1900s. To be more precise, the city was founded in October of 1912 and was formally incorporated in May of 1921. 


 


Demographics


Of the current population, 14.1% is older than 65 years. Of all the households (56,001), 18,558 (33.1%) have children that are younger than 18. The city consists of 27.5% one-person households and unemployment is relatively low with 2.9%. The population of the city currently consists for 16.1% of Hispanics. 2.7% are African-American and a quite fair share made their way from Asia (34.5%). In growing terms it is growing at a moderate pace, with a growth of around 4,000 people between 1990 and 2000.  


 


Climate


The climate of Torrance is quite warm, since it is located in the south of California. Average temperature varies between 66°F in January and 79°F in August, with a fairly dry summer. 


 


Public services


Torrance has multiple public services at its disposal such as a library (which has five branches throughout the city), five high schools, eight middle schools and 17 elementary schools that are scattered throughout the city. There are subsequently also two private high schools, as well as eight private elementary and middle schools. The city furthermore has two major hospitals and over five postal offices at its disposal. Emergency services are of course also available for the city in the form of a police department, fire department and the city’s own 911-dispatch center.
