The City of Manhattan Beach Manhattan Beach is located in southwestern Los Angeles County and is one of the most expensive areas in California. This upscale community is known for its magnificent sunsets which hover right above the pacific coast of this coastal city. A great climate allows residents and beach goers to enjoy laying in the sun, surfing and volleyball as well. The city was founded in December of 1912, but the origin of its name dates back to 1902. The developer, Stewart Merrill gave the city its “Manhattan” name after his hometown. Twenty five years later, “Beach” was added by the request of the postmaster. Geography The Pacific Ocean is the epicenter of the city and has a direct effect on the city’s economy and climate. Clean air and an ocean breeze are had at all times and temperatures are lower than most in the area as a result. A 2 mile beach spans the length of the city and beautiful hills are seen on the western region. Hills as high as 244 feet can be seen which make for beautiful panoramic views at all times of the year. Population Manhattan Beach is the 7th most populated city in the county and has a population of over 35,000. The vast majority of residents are white and account for over 84 percent of the population with the next being 8 percent of residents being of Asian descent. Economy The local economy boasts Target as its largest employer, but many residents find their employment outside of the city’s limits. As of 2007, the average family income of the city was $149,000. This equates to the unusually high home prices seen in the area. As the fourth most expensive beach town in the country, the median home price is $1.9 million dollars. Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball Every year, the city boasts its annual Open Volleyball tournament, which has thousands of entrees and has been dubbed as one of the most prestigious volleyball tournaments in the world. The event is advertised on major television stations and winners will have their name commemorated on the pier. This is a great tournament that allows amateurs to place into the event and go against professionals. Recently named as the #1 city for single and rich individuals, Manhattan Beach has something for everyone. Beautiful beaches line the shores, rolling hills can be seen to the west of the city and temperate climates are enjoyed all year long. |
