Academic Tutoring

Tier One Tutors has created an academic tutoring program that we feel is the best in the city. The first component of this program involves rigid selectivity in our hiring process. On average, we hire only 10% of the people who apply for an academic tutoring position. Furthermore, we only advertise for tutors at the top Universities in Los Angeles (mostly UCLA and USC); this means that a majority of the 90% of applicants that we don't hire also have fantastic grades, SAT scores and other statistics. However, we at Tier One recognize that statistics don’t make a great tutor. Because of this fact, we make a point to have every single tutor personally interview with one of the two owners of the company. No tutor is ever hired or ever receives a final interview from any manager or other low level employee. This unique factor allows Tier One to always be confident that we employ only the best. That's why we feel confident enough to say that we offer the best tutoring ever and we’ll prove it!

Furthermore, we only hire tutors who have amazing grades and test scores combined with fun and exciting personalities. We realize that students don’t enjoy tutoring and, after spending a long day in school, what child is interested in receiving instruction from a tutor for an hour or two at night as well? Therefore, we make sure to employ tutors with great personalities who are excited to do what they do.

Finally, one other unique factor about Tier One Tutors and our method is that we hire all tutors as employees, not independent contractors. This makes all the difference in the world to you as a parent! Companies that set their tutors up as independent contractors are, by law, not allowed to have any continued contact with the clients (AKA you and your family). They cannot settle any conflicts between the tutor and the client and also cannot give any advice or help to the tutor. We feel that having all these restrictions would make us completely useless to parents. Unfortunately most tutoring companies in Southern California are set up like this. To save a few bucks an hour on their payroll, other companies become petty “go-betweens” and match making services. We at Tier One are absolutely not set up in this way because we understand that it's important for our tutor to have someone to answer to and also someone they can come to for advice and assistance. More importantly, however, we want to be able to keep in touch with every parent to ensure the highest level of assistance and happiness. The final important reason for hiring tutors as employees is that we can share with them all the tips and advice for great tutoring that we have learned over the years. We can pass this knowledge on to our tutors to ensure that when a tutor comes to your home you will receive nothing but the best!

SAT Tutoring

Our SAT tutoring is hands down the most unique, comprehensive and personalized in Southern California and possibly in the country. One of the biggest reasons why our program is so different has to do with how and why it was written in the first place. What most parents don’t realize is that every large SAT tutoring company hires writers to put their programs together. Are these writers even tutors? Are they qualified? Are they in touch with students needs? Not necessarily! Believe it or not many programs that are put together by the larger companies are not written from the perspective of an average student, they are just made to look attractive and cover details in the test. Unfortunately that will not get the job done.

This is why Tier One Tutors was created, and is also why we've been so successful thus far. The SAT program was put together over the period of a full year AFTER official practice tests for the new SAT were disseminated to the public. Unlike every other company who wrote programs before they even knew what exactly was going to be on the new test, we pushed the money aside and took the path of idealism. Well, this has finally paid off in our unbelievable and unique approach to the SAT!

The writers of the program are the two young, ambitious and dynamic owners of Tier One Tutors, Brian Mupo and Steven Dorfman. The two of them spent countless hours over the course of a full year writing and developing their new program. The reason they felt so confident that they could create something unique and different is because they went through the struggle on the SAT themselves before they mastered it. Both went through preparation courses and spent a myriad of hours preparing on their own while in high school. After a long hard struggle both achieved their ideal scores. Upon entering college, they independently recognized that helping others to accomplish what they did was of the utmost importance.

After years of working with students of all different performance levels, they were able to develop a keen understanding of the methods and exercises that students reacted well to. We have one basic philosophy to our preparation. Since the test is standardized, your approach should be as well. Combine this with taking as much of the thinking out of students’ hands as possible and that is what we have created.

One perfect example of this is our approach to the Math section of the test. Our groundbreaking “Natural Reactions” are absolutely the first of their kind in the industry. We have broken the 54 Math questions on every test down into 18 natural reactions. This means that students learn about 18 problems and what their quick and natural reaction should be EVERY time they see this problem. Learning the Math section in this “categorical” fashion makes problem solving a breeze, and our “Natural Reactions” allow even poor math students to routinely jump up 100-150 points on that section alone.

Furthermore, we have a method for the new essay on the test that guarantees a score of an 8 or higher, regardless of how poor a student's writing skills may be. In addition, we have broken down the grammar portion of the test into merely 6 rules a student needs to know. The bottom line is that there is a true revolution going on in test prep today. We are making obsolete the idea that the best way to study for this test is to fill every student's mind with as much information as possible and then hope some of it holds. We say no to conventions and yes to innovation.
